Everyone seems to think they have the answers about resolving to get healthy in the new year. Well, I am no exception.
Over the past couple weeks I have read articles and watched TV shows that confidently list out the do’s and don’ts for shedding the lbs. All the ideas sound great in theory, but I find that my formula is much more simple and realistic than what the “experts” have to offer:
Eat Healthier + Increase Physical Activity = Get Healthy
First you’ll notice that I didn’t say eat LESS. I said eat HEALTHIER. Studies actually show that eating more frequently is better for your metabolism and diet. Instead of three square meals, I recommend eating several smaller, healthier meals throughout the day.
You’ll also notice that I said HEALTHIER, not HEALTHY. As you can tell from the name of my blog I am a total foodie, and deliciousness like roasted bone marrow and chocolate soufflĂ© aren’t part of any diet I’ve ever read about. The key is to not deprive yourself. Improve your eating habits where you can with substitutions and compromises so that you don’t feel guilty when you indulge with French fries (which I do often).
Lastly, the formula I listed suggests that you INCREASE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY rather than EXERCISE. I say this because it’s important not to intimidate yourself, and let’s face it, exercise can be intimidating.
To become more active think of things you enjoy doing and that fit well into your day to day life so you are able to keep up long term. For instance, as a New Yorker I love to walk and I found that my 1.5 mile commute to work takes 30 minutes whether I walk or use MTA. So, on days when I just don’t feel like going to the gym I walk to and from work instead, totaling 3 miles for the day. Other non-elliptical cardio to consider: participating in sports leagues or groups, trying different types of classes at the gym, or exercising outdoors.
Now that you have read my formula for getting healthy, be sure to check back to learn about food and activity ideas that can help you adopt this lifestyle without breaking the bank!
